Fall/Winter 2012 Trend Report

Fall/Winter 2012 Trend Report

The fall and winter seasons signal the replacement of the whimsical flower-child with a much more sophisticated and luxurious girl. One who discards her diaphanous pastel sundresses, oversized sunnies and gem-encrusted sandals for sumptuous (p)leather, rich oxblood and glamorous brocade. This season is all about indulgence and requires the adoption of a lifestyle, not a closet.

Some designers opted for a tougher look this season, trading extravagant baroque influences for something much more dangerous. These designers armed their models with thick glossy leathers carefully laced to lend an air of seduction, embossed to assume the characteristics of freshly-skinned alligator, or laden with zippers to craft a quality of mystery.

Most designers, however, took their audiences back to simpler times – or at least for European Royalty – where all things were baroque and extremely lavish. For design houses such as Balmain, this meant creating skin-tight skirts, dresses and pant suits embellished with thousands of miniscule pearls and jewels in order to replicate the intricate geometric patterns found in palaces.

Oscar de la Renta showed the world that he could make Anna Dello Russo’s (you should know who she is) dreams come true by defining  fashion as opulence and making flashy accessories inseperable from the garment. Oscar proved that costume and fake jewelry are equally deserving of envy as the real stuff!

Friday, December 7, 2012

The holiday season is upon us. I know this because the dry frigid air has finally tamed and beautified the usually poofy mess that rests atop my head into a sleek and shiny mass I like to call hair. As global warming takes its course and the usual white blanket of snow is replaced dreary rain-filled days, will the typical wool jacket and cozy cable knit sweater still be at the top of our holiday wish lists, or will they be replaced by rain boots and trench coats? Although I am currently cuddled under my comforter cover, lulled by the pitter patter of rain hitting the sidewalk outside while contemplating  - and worrying about - picking out an outfit that will survive the soggy sprint from the car to my birthday bash tomorrow, I will never compromise my list of Christmas-themed gifts, even if they do not comply with the current climate.

This is what I'm wishing for right now
1. Baroque, Baroque, Baroque... Who wouldn't love it. Its a style I've been in love with for ages (my signature Matia Collections trend being the damask pattern) and I cannot hide how thrilled I am that I can't enter a store without seeing it!

2. Oxblood... yet again a fab color I have always liked (its the same as burgundy, just a fancier name) that mixes sophistication with fun. Not to mention its also a very similar color to Rudolph's red nose.

3. Leather, I mean P-leather... If you know me, you know that I am an avid supporter of animal rights and therefore I refuse to consume any food made with animal products or even buy incredible pieces that include leather, whether that be goat, lamb or cow. However, I have always loved leather and my decision to go vegan in the fashion department has been detrimental to my shoe and handbag collection, in addition to my ability to purchase leather garments. This is why I am ever so happy that leather has become such a huge trend this season, not because I'm a rocker - lets face it I'm much more a Blair Waldorf than a Jenny Humphry - but because the extreme popularity has caused many major fashion labels to create faux-leather pieces for lower price ranges meaning I can finally fulfill my dreams of buying fabulous leather pieces.

Ever look back at your middle school photos, from say when you were 14, and think ew, who is that and why were they so awkward? I have, but apparently Kate Moss has not. Look at this stunner when her career started. And if you love these photos, as much as I do, jet off to London tonight in order to  attend the auction to acquire them tomorrow. Oh and don't forget to bring your piggy bank.

Casting the Vote: Presidential Style

As the presidential election approaches, presentation becomes a key factor to success, and this does not mean the presentation of the prospective presidents’ opinions and viewpoints, as Mitt Romney has seemed to have fooled half of America with his vacillating policies, but instead of style and fashion. I would analyze every tie and suit that the president and Mitt Romney have worn; however, I realize that this is pointless considering neither candidate will make a fashion statement within the next four years or ever. Therefore, I have chosen to critique the both Ann Romney’s and Michelle Obama’s past outfits and how they reflect their husbands plans for the country. After all, do we remember Jackie Kennedy for restoring the White House or her oversized sunglasses, string of pearls and pastel shift dresses that made her a fashion icon?
While both women have exhibited a superb taste in clothing, Ann Romney’s appears to be newly formed, like that of her husband’s position on just about anything, while Michelle Obama proves to have a genuine love for style and fashion and would never be caught in the ‘soccer mom’ attire Ann Romney sported prior to the campaign. Although Ann Romney’s style is newly established, she doesn’t seem to mind spending thousands of dollars on designer garments that she will only wear once, a reflection of her husband’s plans to create outrageous tax cuts for the wealthy in order to ensure the stagnation of social classes. Michelle Obama on the other hand refuses to use her style as a status symbol, often opting to recycle outfits for multiple prestigious events even wearing the same Thom Browne dress to the final debate and the Democratic National Convention. Additionally, the first lady invests in up and coming American designers who have yet to establish themselves within the fashion industry, lending them much publicity and putting Mitt Romney’s platform of helping small businesses into question as his wife has adopted a stage-five-clinger attitude when it comes to Oscar de la Renta’s lavish, prestigious and popular designs.
The clear winner of this presidential (style) debate is Michelle Obama; however is Ann Romney’s poor – or  should I say rich – choice in clothing entirely her fault? After all, Anna Wintour, the editor and chief at Vogue, an avid supporter of the Obamas and the queen of the fashion industry, has publicly shunned Ann Romney. I think not, as Michelle Obama and her two girls often stun the public in their chic yet modest Anthropologie and H&M apparel, two mainstream fashion empires Miss Wintour has no control over.

Sky of Blue (cards)

Hi lovely fashionistas!
Anyone who loves fashion also loves shopping - its a given! - but more so than that they LOVE creativity. That is why I'm so excited to tell you all about my amazing aunt's greeting card company Sky of Blue Cards. Karla Ebrahimi, the superwoman/supermom/supereverything behind "Sky of Blue" is such an inspiration to all of us girls who have a goal but maybe are too timid to embark upon fulfilling it. For years, Karla worked as a graphic and website designer for a wide array of important brands, from chic clothing boutiques to CVS Pharmacy; however, being the designer of a greeting card company was what she always desired, using graphic design as a stepping stone to this much larger ambition. Now Karla has become such a big name in the greeting card industry - being sold nationwide as the exclusive holiday card company for Barneys New York and a Trendys and Louie awards finalist - that she has been challenged to expand as boxes of greeting cards have filled every corner of her life! So everyone, please check her out, if being approved by Matia Collections isn't enough, then BARNEYS NEW YORK must be!!!! Start shopping, because like Sky of Blue Cards says, Karla's Cards are nothing short of whimsical, chic and fun!!

PFW: In words

DTD Entertainment

Tobi Makinde

DTD Entertainment

The energy backstage was palpable, coursing through everyone’s veins to create an impermeable excitement. In mere moments an electronic beat would waft from the speakers and my models’ heels would graze the runway; while the premiere of my brand, Matia Collections, at Pittsburgh Fashion Week (PFW) would only last a few short moments – all of which are now blurred together in my memory – they would serve as a symbol of the years of time I devoted towards fashion design and developing my own label.
Hours prior to the show I was uncharacteristically calm, as I had spent the previous day finalizing my soundtrack, compiling official forms, altering garments and resolving last-minute disasters until 1:30 in the morning. On the way to the show, I received a troubling text from Carly – a junior who informed me of the student-designer opportunities at PFW  – that simply stated “It’s crazy here!” as she helped to organize models and designers before their big premier. Immediately I imagined a startling setting, crammed with hoards of late and unruly models and screaming designers and stylists; however, upon my arrival, I was greeted an entirely different environment as two models patiently waited for my instruction. My awe only increased as my models, one by one, scurried in with their hair and makeup done just as I had asked, and even more incredible, had they failed to produce the proper hair and makeup, all of the other girls quickly huddled around her, armed with the dangerous tools of hairspray, eyeliner and lipstick producing the perfect image after only a few minutes.
When the half-hour mark hit, time seemed to warp, almost as though we were characters inside a spaceship on Star Wars. Everyone buzzed around me, as I quickly handed them “Femme” Pencil Skirts, peplum tops and bandage dresses, some of which had been completed four years ago and other merely 6 days prior. Once my models were adorned in their fabulous attire, they strutted – I walked – backstage in prepared of the exciting conclusion to all of our work and rehearsals.
French pop filled every molecule of air, providing a bubbly and exuberant atmosphere, yet was cancelled out by the overwhelming applause given to each of my models as they proudly represented my brand on the runway.  Finally, after all of the models filed onto the runway, a moment silently preserved by the lens of the photographer’s camera, I joined the last model – a friend of mine who constantly aided me in photo shoots for my website – on the runway for the finale. Suddenly I realized that I was caught in a stampede of models as they moved to exit the stage; however, I finally reached the end of the runway, at which point I became extremely humbled by the audience’s extreme support, providing me with a feeling of great pride and accomplishment.
Trying to capture all of the moments of the past couple hours into my memory, I lingered backstage with my models as we all broke out into a chorus of applause and cheers in response to our great success: we had just completed the first of many future Matia Collections shows.

The Fashion Show!

Hi fashionable friends!
As you may know, last night I unveiled both Matia Collection's "Femme" and "Velvet Label" Collections at Pittsburgh Fashion Week! Luckily, I happen to go to a school full of extremely talented students, so I was able to get my peer, Randon, the creator and founder of DTD Entertainment to video tape my show. Please watch and enjoy my spring/summer 2013 Collection, full of shimmery sheers, placid pastels and textured laces!

Within the next hour I will post a summary of the show, written for my school's newspaper and a video. FIRST SALE!

Hi everyone! So as you may know, Stained by Sunshine - the blog you are currently reading - is a product of my clothing brand Matia Collections. This past week my beautiful and amazing friend Natalie made my first sale as she bought this adorable 'scripted' skirt. Take some notes on how she styles the look, its simply fab! I just wanted to share this milestone for the world! Love you all and thanks for reading xoxoxo

As my friend said: Coco Chanel?

While I was picking out my outfit the last thing I was thinking about was Coco Chanel; however, I find  the comment extremely flattering. For the past few months this beautiful scarf of mine has sat on a chair in my room and finally this past week I crafted an outfit worthy of it. My style inspiration came from the french as almost every chic woman in the perfect city was adorned in a beautiful silk scarf. When wearing something so extravagant, it is important to make it the key focus of an outfit, so that its beauty is not overshadowed by other pieces.

Boho chic?

Hello fashionable loves!
So today I've been making line-ups, finalizing models and putting the finishing touches on looks for the premier of Matia Collections at Pittsburgh Fashion Week!!! For one look which included a eyelet vest, I needed to create a maxi skirt to go with it, and knowing me and my complete love of sheer and sparkles, especially when together, I couldn't help choose unconventional fabrics. Since creating the skirt, I have been messing around with it and creating outfits (due to my short height I usually steer clear of maxis, but now its time to have some fun!) So, what do you think?!

Scrubmania

I want to tell you all about one of my greatest friends Lani Lazzari who is also the CEO of the ultra-smooth company Simple Sugars Scrub. My friend, who just graduated high school is making records in the world as she was featured in Forbes Magazine as youngest CEO ever! Lani started her company originally because she needed a bath wash that was gentle enough to cater to her sensitive skin, now years later, her products are sold in boutiques all around the U.S. Before using Simple Sugars I had never been a huge fan of body scrubs as they were usually scratchy and left me feeling like I had incurred a brush burn rather than exfoliation. However, Lani's all-natural sugar-based scrubs were different than anything I had used before, not only did it leave my skin super silky, but I didn't have to endure any pain to get the fab results. Yet, the ultimate reason that I use Simple Sugars is because it pleased my olfactory (AP Lit vocab word, look it up!) sense. Because all of Lani's scrubs are all-natural, you never find yourself smelling strange toxic chemical smells, instead everything smells so good that often you wish you could eat it (technically you can, but it doesn't taste as good as it smells - yes, I have tried it!). My all-time favorite scrub that I just cannot get enough of is the lilac scrub whose smell brings back memories of stormy spring days and sweet flowers. I have yet to try a scrub that I do not like, even flavors I don't normally enjoy eating such as gingerbread are impossible not to get hooked on. So if I were you, and I just bothered to read this entire novel, I would check out the Simple Sugars website to learn more about the brand, Lani, and the products. I promise, you won't be able to resist buying it!

A week of fashion: Thursday

Today's look combines the perfect amount of professionalism with girly-ness. I believe that the keys to a great outfit are simplicity, material and texture; sure, prints and bold colors a great, but they're difficult to match and sometimes can appear tacky or cheap. As you can tell from my past posts, I gravitate towards pale pastels and curve-esentuating silhouettes. My favorite part of this outfit is the blazer; the cozy wool used eliminates the boxiness of most blazers and the charcoal piping create sliming and defining lines. Additionally, the blazer carries a lot of character as it is composed of many discrete details including the inner ruffle, victorian lapel clasps and intricate zipper. The shell pink skirt works to compliment the blazer as it offers a discrete weaving pattern and a streamlined shape.
